HC + Lucian Matis

Early last week, we were invited to attend a Lucian Matis cocktail party at the prestigious Thompson Hotel Rooftop. With a gorgeous sunset and a breathtaking view of our fair city behind us, we celebrated the success of the Canadian designer. In his arsenal; several highly acclaimed fashion awards, editorial spreads in major fashion magazines and multiple appearances on industry related television shows. Since viewing his Fall / Winter 2012 runway collection at Toronto Fashion week (See: HC @ Toronto Fashion Week ), we’ve kept a watchful eye on the talented designer. We sat down with Lucian for a few minutes to have a quick chat and catch up. Listen in on the full interview here !

HC Manager; Erika with Lucian Matis & HC Co-owner; Jina

Haute Classics: We loved your last collection shown at Fashion week here in Toronto. What was your inspiration behind the gothic elegance we saw come down the runway?

Lucian Matis: Thank you for liking the collection first of all, its a wonderful compliment! The inspiration came from nature. I get very inspired by it a lot, and I think nature has endless sources of inspiration; coming from the sea all the way to the biggest of mountains. This collection in particular was inspired by the symmetry of nature.  I thought  about the wings of a butterfly for example, how they open up so perfectly. I recreated a lace that was hand designed by me, and hand sewn by the people in my studio. That really was a labour of love and dedication. We just want to create art and make a statement with what we do, so I hope we achieved that.

HC: You absolutely did! What was your favourite piece from that collection?

LM: I have a few favourites.  When it comes to the show; one of them being the opening. I thought the closing was my favourite as well, it took about 14 days to make. When it comes to a photo shoot, I have a couple different pieces that stand out to me. I can’t make up my mind!

HC: What can we expect in the future, where is Lucian Matis heading?

LM: Lucian Matis may be heading to Morocco. So, I’m very excited about that!  I have an idea in my mind that I’ve been sitting with for a while. I want to see if it can come to life. I’m not 100% sure yet, but i think it’s about 80% already created. It’s a matter of seeing things there, seeing the buildings there and getting inspired by them. I have always felt a connection with Morocco.

HC: You should always work where you are inspired! Will this mean you will flagship there?

LM: I actually will be flying to Morocco to  find my inspiration and fly back.

HC: Good! So then you will still be a Canadian designer?

LM: Absolutely!
